     Nagoya Castle was built by Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1615. It is designated as the first national treasure as a castle, with a large castle tower that boasts the largest total floor area in history with a golden killer whale, a gorgeous Honmaru Palace, and a fortress with a solid iron wall. It was a famous castle. Even after it was destroyed by fire during the war, it was designated as a national special historic site as one of the country's leading castles, and the restored Honmaru Palace conveys what it looked like at the time.

    After the great fire of 1700, the road from Nakabashi bridge to Gojobashi bridge were expanded to four ken, or shike, (about seven meters) to prevent merchant houses along the Horikawa River to be destroyed by fire. This town of merchants, located on the west bank of Horikawa River that goes through the castle town of Nagoya, developed alongside the construction of Nagoya Castle in the early Edo period.
