      The former Ohara family residence, designated as a National Important Cultural Property, has the inside view unimaginable from the front. You can feel “Kurashiki among Kurashiki” in the serene atmosphere of warehouses along stone pavements, tranquil Japanese gardens, etc. The residence introduces the history of eight generations of the Ohara family with substantial exhibitions: the Ohara family collections, works of art, creative exhibits such as “Showering Words”, “Cube Tree”, etc. A book café surrounded by the Ohara family’s book collection is also available.

      The Bikan Historical Quarter with a strong image of white walls is also a stage for industrial tourism. Kurashiki was a prosperous demesne town which collected cotton and rice; however, in the Meiji Period (1868-1912), Kurashiki was revitalized by the spinning industry and the Kurashiki Spinning Factory was founded on the site of the former magistrate office. The headquarter factory was redeveloped and rehabilitated to Ivy Square as a complex cultural facility. The facility with attractive red bricks entwined by ivy includes a workshop where visitors can try pottery art, a hotel, etc. The Kurabo Memorial Hall utilizing a raw cotton warehouse at the time of the foundation tells the history of the industry in those days since foundation.
